Need to know

I made cornbread last night. To go with my chili. It was pretty good. BUT. I left my buttermilk setting out on the counter. My question is this: Does buttermilk setting out go bad? And more importantly, how can you tell. I poured it down the sink. It looked alright going down the drain. Just wondering.
